Average Calculator – Mean, Median, Mode and Weighted Average

Paste a list of numbers to get the average (mean), median, mode, range, sum and standard deviation, or switch to weighted average for grades and prices.

Quick answer

The average (arithmetic mean) is the sum of all numbers divided by how many there are. For 7, 8.5, 6, 9 and 10: (7 + 8.5 + 6 + 9 + 10) ÷ 5 = 8.1. A weighted average multiplies each value by its weight first and divides by the sum of the weights.

How to use the Average Calculator

  1. Type or paste your numbers, separated by spaces, commas, semicolons or new lines.
  2. Read the mean, median, mode, range and more.
  3. For a weighted average, open the second tab, enter each value with its weight and add rows as needed.

Mean, median and mode

  • Mean (average): the sum divided by the count. Sensitive to very high or low values.
  • Median: the middle value after sorting. With an even count, the average of the two middle values. Better for incomes and house prices.
  • Mode: the value that appears most often. A list can have several modes, or none.

Weighted average

Use a weighted average when values do not count equally — for example exams worth 40% and homework worth 20%. Formula: Σ(value × weight) ÷ Σ weights. With grades 8 (weight 30), 6.5 (30) and 9 (40): (240 + 195 + 360) ÷ 100 = 7.95.

Standard deviation

The standard deviation shows how spread out the numbers are. A small value means the numbers are close to the average; a large value means they vary a lot. This calculator shows the population standard deviation.

Geometric mean

For growth rates and ratios, the geometric mean (the n-th root of the product) is more accurate than the normal average. It is only defined when all numbers are positive.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate an average?

Add all the numbers and divide by how many numbers there are. 4, 8 and 15 → 27 ÷ 3 = 9.

What is the difference between mean and median?

The mean is the arithmetic average; the median is the middle value. In 1, 2, 3, 100 the mean is 26.5 but the median is 2.5.

How do I calculate a weighted average?

Multiply each value by its weight, add the results, and divide by the total of the weights.

Can I paste numbers from Excel?

Yes. Copy a column from Excel or Google Sheets and paste it into the box.

What if no number repeats?

Then there is no mode, and the calculator shows “none”.
