Dice Roller – Roll a Dice Online (d4, d6, d8, d10, d12, d20, d100)

Lost the dice for your board game? Roll up to 10 virtual dice at once, from a 4-sided d4 to a d20 for role-playing games or a d100 for percentages.

Quick answer

Choose the number of dice and the type, then press Roll the dice. Each face is equally likely: a d6 shows each number 1 time in 6. The expected total of n dice with s sides is n × (s + 1) ÷ 2, so 2d6 averages 7 and 3d6 averages 10.5.

How to use the Dice Roller

  1. Pick how many dice to roll (1–10).
  2. Choose the dice type: d4, d6, d8, d10, d12, d20 or d100.
  3. Press Roll the dice (Space or Enter also works when the button is selected).
  4. Read the total, the sum of each die, the average per die and the lowest and highest possible totals. Your last 10 rolls are kept below.

Dice notation explained

Games write dice as NdS: N is the number of dice and S the number of sides. 2d6 means two six-sided dice (Monopoly, Catan), 1d20 one twenty-sided die (Dungeons & Dragons attack rolls) and 1d100 a percentage roll from 1 to 100.

Two dice probabilities

With one die, all faces are equally likely. With two dice, the totals are not: there are 36 combinations, and more of them add up to 7 than to any other number.

Total (2d6)WaysChance
2 or 1212.8%
3 or 1125.6%
4 or 1038.3%
5 or 9411.1%
6 or 8513.9%
7616.7%

That is why the 6 and 8 hexes are the best spots in Catan and why 7 is the key number in craps.

The standard role-playing dice set

  • d4: small weapons and healing potions.
  • d6: the classic cube, also used for fireball damage.
  • d8 and d10: weapon damage; two d10s also make a percentile roll.
  • d12: heavy weapons such as a greataxe.
  • d20: attacks, ability checks and saving throws. A natural 20 has a 5% chance.

Expected total, minimum and maximum

The roller also shows what to expect. For 4d6 the lowest possible total is 4, the highest 24 and the expected total 4 × 3.5 = 14. Comparing your roll to the expected total tells you at a glance whether it was lucky. Every roll uses your browser’s cryptographic random generator, so virtual dice are at least as fair as real ones, which can be slightly unbalanced.
