Discount Calculator – Sale Price, Percent Off and Savings

Enter a price and a discount to see the sale price and how much you save. Stack an extra percent off, add sales tax, or find the percent off between an original and a sale price.

Quick answer

Sale price = original price × (1 − discount ÷ 100). Example: $80 with 25% off → $80 × 0.75 = $60, so you save $20. To find the percent off between two prices: (original − sale) ÷ original × 100. $50 → $35 is 15 ÷ 50 = 30% off.

How to use the Discount Calculator

  1. Enter the original price.
  2. Choose Percent off or Amount off and enter the discount.
  3. Optional: add an extra discount (for example a coupon on top of a sale) and your sales tax rate.
  4. Read the final price, the amount saved and the total discount. The quick table shows 10% to 70% off at a glance.
  5. Use the % off between two prices tab when you know both prices.

How to calculate percent off in your head

  • 10% off: move the decimal point one place left. 10% of $45 is $4.50.
  • 20% off: double the 10%. 20% of $45 is $9, so you pay $36.
  • 25% off: divide by 4. 25% of $60 is $15.
  • 50% off: halve the price.
  • 15% off: 10% plus half of 10%. 15% of $40 is $4 + $2 = $6.

Stacked discounts are not added

A sale of 20% off plus an extra 10% coupon is not 30% off. The second discount applies to the already reduced price: $100 → $80 → $72. The total discount is 28%, because 0.8 × 0.9 = 0.72. The calculator shows this effective discount for you.

Working backwards to the original price

To find the price before a discount, divide the sale price by (1 − discount). A jacket that costs $42 after 30% off was $42 ÷ 0.7 = $60. Adding 30% back to $42 gives $54.60, which is wrong, because the 30% was taken from the larger original price.

Discounts and sales tax

In the US, sales tax is added at the register, and for a store discount it is normally charged on the reduced price. A $80 item at 25% off with 8% sales tax costs $60 × 1.08 = $64.80. Canada works the same way. In the UK, Australia, New Zealand and India, shelf prices already include VAT or GST, so leave the tax box empty.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate 20% off a price?

Multiply the price by 0.8. $65 × 0.8 = $52, so you save $13.

How do I find the discount percentage?

Subtract the sale price from the original, divide by the original and multiply by 100. $120 → $90: 30 ÷ 120 = 25% off.

Is 20% off and then 20% off the same as 40% off?

No. It is 36% off, because 0.8 × 0.8 = 0.64 of the original price.

How do I find the original price before a discount?

Divide the sale price by (1 − discount). A $42 price after 30% off was $42 ÷ 0.7 = $60.

Is sales tax calculated before or after a discount?

For store discounts and coupons, usually after: you pay tax on the reduced price. Rules for manufacturer coupons vary by state.
