Tip Calculator – Calculate the Tip and Split the Bill
Enter the bill, pick a tip percentage and the number of people. You see the tip, the total and what each person pays, with an option to tip on the amount before tax.
Tip = bill × tip % ÷ 100. Example: a $68 bill with an 18% tip → $68 × 0.18 = $12.24, total $80.24. Split between 4 people, each pays $20.06. Quick trick for 20%: move the decimal one place left and double it ($68 → $6.80 → $13.60).
How to use the Tip Calculator
- Enter the bill amount.
- Tap a tip percentage (10% to 25%) or type your own. Your last choice is remembered.
- Enter the number of people to split the bill.
- Optional: enter the sales tax shown on the receipt to tip on the pre-tax amount, and tick round each share up to avoid coins; the effective tip % is shown.
How much to tip in the US
| Service | Usual tip |
|---|---|
| Sit-down restaurant | 15–20% (18–20% is now common) |
| Bar | $1–2 per drink or 15–20% of the tab |
| Food delivery | 15–20%, at least a few dollars |
| Taxi or rideshare | 15–20% |
| Hair salon or barber | 15–20% |
| Hotel housekeeping | $2–5 per night |
In most US states, servers can be paid a lower “tipped” base wage, so tips make up a large part of their income. Check the receipt for an automatic gratuity, often added for groups of six or more, so you don’t tip twice.
Tip table
| Bill | 15% | 18% | 20% | 25% |

| $50 | $7.50 | $9.00 | $10.00 | $12.50 |
| $75 | $11.25 | $13.50 | $15.00 | $18.75 |
| $100 | $15.00 | $18.00 | $20.00 | $25.00 |
| $150 | $22.50 | $27.00 | $30.00 | $37.50 |
Before or after tax?
Etiquette guides say to tip on the pre-tax amount, although many people simply tip on the total. With a bill of $86.40 that includes $6.40 tax, a 20% tip on the pre-tax $80 is $16, not $17.28.
Tipping in other countries
- Canada: similar to the US, 15–20% at restaurants.
- UK: 10–12.5% if service was good. Many restaurants add a discretionary service charge (often 12.5%); if it is on the bill, no extra tip is needed. By law, staff must receive all tips and service charges in full.
- Australia: not expected because of higher minimum wages; 10% for excellent service is appreciated.
- India: about 5–10% at restaurants. A service charge on the bill is voluntary and you can ask for it to be removed.

Frequently asked questions
How do you figure out a 20% tip?
Move the decimal point one place to the left to get 10%, then double it. On a $45 bill: $4.50 × 2 = $9.
Is 15% still a good tip?
It is the minimum for decent sit-down service in the US. 18–20% is now standard, and more for excellent service.
Should I tip on the total with tax?
Strictly, no: tip on the amount before tax. Enter the tax in the optional box and the calculator does this for you.
How do I split a bill with a tip?
Add the tip to the bill and divide by the number of people. $120 + 20% = $144, so 4 people pay $36 each.
Do you tip in the UK?
Usually 10–12.5% in restaurants with table service, unless a service charge is already on the bill. Tipping in pubs is not expected.
