Quick answer

Many office and data-entry jobs ask for 40–50 WPM with at least 90–95% accuracy.

How WPM is calculated

A “word” is any 5 characters, including spaces. Net WPM counts only correct characters: correct characters ÷ 5 ÷ minutes. Raw WPM counts everything you typed. Accuracy is correct characters ÷ typed characters.

How to type faster

  • Keep your fingers on the home row (ASDF – JKL;) and use all ten fingers.
  • Look at the screen, not the keyboard.
  • Aim for accuracy first; speed follows.
  • Practise 10–15 minutes a day rather than one long session.
  • Sit up straight with relaxed wrists, slightly above the keys.
