How upside-down text works
There is no “upside down font”. Unicode contains many letters from other alphabets and phonetic symbols that happen to look like rotated Latin letters: ɐ, q, ɔ, p, ǝ, ɟ, ƃ, ɥ, ᴉ and so on. The generator replaces each letter with its look-alike and then reverses the text, so it reads correctly when you turn your phone around.

Backwards and mirror text
Backwards text keeps normal letters but reverses their order: “hello” becomes “olleh”. Mirror text also uses mirrored letters, like writing seen in a mirror (similar to “AMBULANCE” on the front of an ambulance). The alphabet backwards is simply z y x w v u t s r q p o n m l k j i h g f e d c b a.
The upside-down exclamation mark
Spanish starts questions and exclamations with inverted marks: ¿ and ¡. On Windows type Alt+0191 (¿) and Alt+0161 (¡); on a Mac press Option+Shift+? and Option+1.
