How words are counted
A word is any group of letters or numbers between spaces or punctuation. Hyphenated words such as “well-known” and words with apostrophes such as “don’t” count as one word. Numbers like 2026 also count as words, the same way Microsoft Word and Google Docs count them.
How many words is a page?
| Words | Single-spaced pages | Double-spaced pages |
|---|---|---|
| 250 | 0.5 | 1 |
| 500 | 1 | 2 |
| 1,000 | 2 | 4 |
| 1,500 | 3 | 6 |
| 2,500 | 5 | 10 |
These are averages for 12-point Times New Roman with 1-inch margins. Bigger fonts and headings change the count.
