Webcam Test – Check Your Camera Online (Resolution and FPS)
Make sure your camera works before a video call, interview or stream. See the live picture, the real resolution and frame rate, and take a snapshot.
Press Start and allow camera access. If you see yourself, the webcam works. Below the preview you get the resolution (for example 1280 × 720, which is 720p), the frame rate reported by the camera, the frame rate actually measured and the aspect ratio (16:9 or 4:3).
How to use the Webcam Test
- Press Start and click Allow when your browser asks for the camera.
- Choose a camera and a resolution (Automatic, 480p, 720p, 1080p or 4K).
- Check the resolution, frame rate and aspect ratio under the picture.
- Press Take snapshot to save a PNG photo, or Full screen for a big preview. Untick Mirror image to see what others see.
- Press Stop to turn the camera off.
Everything happens in your browser: no video or photo is uploaded.
Webcam resolutions
| Name | Pixels | Aspect ratio |
|---|---|---|
| 480p (VGA) | 640 × 480 | 4:3 |
| 720p (HD) | 1280 × 720 | 16:9 |
| 1080p (Full HD) | 1920 × 1080 | 16:9 |
| 4K (UHD) | 3840 × 2160 | 16:9 |
When you request a resolution, the camera picks the closest one it supports. If you choose 1080p and the test shows 1280 × 720, your webcam (or its current mode) tops out at 720p. Most laptop webcams are 720p or 1080p.
Frame rate (FPS)
Webcams usually run at 30 frames per second; some reach 60. The tool shows two values: the rate the camera reports, and the rate measured in your browser. If the measured rate is much lower, the camera may be slowing down in poor light (longer exposure) or your computer may be busy. Better lighting often brings the frame rate back up.
Why is my picture mirrored?
Most video apps show you a mirror image of yourself because it feels natural, like a bathroom mirror. The people on the call see the unmirrored image. Untick Mirror image to check how text on a shirt or whiteboard looks to them. Snapshots are saved the same way as the preview.
Camera not working? Check these
- Browser permission: click the lock icon in the address bar, allow the camera and reload.
- Windows: Settings → Privacy & security → Camera: turn on camera access and access for desktop apps.
- Mac: System Settings → Privacy & Security → Camera: allow your browser.
- Busy camera: only one app can use the camera at a time on many systems. Close Zoom, Teams, Skype or OBS.
- Privacy shutter or key: many laptops have a sliding cover or a camera key (often on F8 or F10) that turns the camera off.
- Black picture: choose “Automatic” resolution or another camera from the list.
Look better on video
Face a window or lamp rather than sitting with light behind you, raise the camera to eye level and keep it about an arm’s length away.

Frequently asked questions
How do I test my webcam?
Press Start and allow camera access. If you see a live picture, the webcam works. The test also shows its resolution and frame rate.
Is the webcam test safe and private?
Yes. The video stays in your browser. Nothing is recorded or uploaded, and snapshots are saved only to your own device.
Why is my webcam not detected?
Check that the browser and operating system allow camera access, that no other app is using it and that the privacy shutter is open.
What resolution is my webcam?
Choose 4K or 1080p and press Start. The test shows the highest resolution the camera actually delivers.
Why does my camera image look reversed?
The preview is mirrored like a mirror by default. Untick Mirror image to see the view other people get.
