Binary Translator – Binary to Text, Hex to ASCII and Number Bases

Translate text into binary code or hex and back again, or convert any whole number between decimal, binary, octal and hexadecimal. Every box updates as you type.

Quick answer

Each character is stored as one or more bytes, and each byte is written as 8 bits (binary) or 2 hex digits. Example: “Hi” → H = 72 = 01001000 = 48 hex, i = 105 = 01101001 = 69 hex, so “Hi” is 01001000 01101001 in binary and 48 69 in hex.

How to use the Binary Translator

  1. Pick a tab: Text ↔ binary, Text ↔ hex or Number bases.
  2. Type in any box. The other boxes update instantly, in both directions.
  3. Paste binary with or without spaces, or hex with 0x, \x, commas or colons. Invalid input shows a clear error.
  4. Tap Copy to copy a result. Open the ASCII table to look up codes 32–126.

Everything runs in your browser. Nothing you type is uploaded.

How text becomes binary

Computers store text as numbers. ASCII gives each English letter, digit and symbol a code from 0 to 127, and UTF-8 extends this to every language and emoji. The translator encodes your text as UTF-8 bytes and writes each byte as an 8-bit group. Letters A–Z and a–z take one byte each; an accented letter such as é takes two bytes (C3 A9) and the euro sign € takes three (E2 82 AC).

Binary code alphabet (common characters)

CharacterDecimalBinaryHex
A650100000141
Z90010110105A
a970110000161
z122011110107A
0480011000030
space320010000020
!330010000121

Notice that a lowercase letter is always 32 more than its capital: only one bit (the 00100000 bit) changes.

How to read binary

Each position is a power of 2, from right to left: 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128. Add the values where there is a 1. For 01001000: 64 + 8 = 72, which is “H”. Hex is shorter: each hex digit stands for 4 bits (0–9 then A–F for 10–15), so one byte is always two hex digits.

Number bases

The third tab converts whole numbers of any size, including negatives. For example, 2026 is 11111101010 in binary, 3752 in octal and 7EA in hex. A few quick ones: 6 in binary is 110, 100 in binary is 1100100, and 255 is 11111111 (FF), the largest value one byte can hold. Prefixes 0b, 0o and 0x are accepted.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert hex to ASCII?

Split the hex into pairs, convert each pair to a number and look up the character: 48 65 6C 6C 6F = 72 101 108 108 111 = “Hello”. Paste the hex into the Text ↔ hex tab to do it instantly.

What does 01001000 01101001 mean?

It is “Hi”: 01001000 is 72 (H) and 01101001 is 105 (i).

Why are there 8 digits per letter?

One byte has 8 bits. Plain ASCII only needs 7, so the first bit of an English letter is always 0. The decoder also accepts 7-bit groups.

Can I translate emojis and accented letters?

Yes. They are encoded as UTF-8, so they use 2 to 4 bytes each instead of one.

What is 100 in binary?

1100100, because 64 + 32 + 4 = 100.
