Rounding Calculator – Nearest Tenth, Hundredth, Whole Number and More

Round a number to thousands, hundreds, tens, a whole number, decimal places or significant figures, using the usual “5 rounds up” rule or seven other methods.

Quick answer

Look at the first digit you drop: if it is 5 or more, add one to the last digit you keep; if it is 4 or less, keep it. Example: 3.14159 to the nearest hundredth → the dropped digit is 1, so 3.14. 374,518 to the nearest thousand → the dropped digit is 5, so 375,000.

How to use the Rounding Calculator

  1. Type the number. Commas, a decimal comma and scientific notation such as 1e3 are accepted.
  2. Choose what to round to: thousands, hundreds, tens, whole number, tenths, hundredths, thousandths, N decimal places or N significant figures.
  3. Pick a method. Half up is the one taught in school.
  4. Read the result, the explanation, the rounding difference and a table with every common place.

Place values

Round 374,518.2671 to the nearest…Result
Thousand375,000
Hundred374,500
Ten374,520
Whole number374,518
Tenth (1 decimal place)374,518.3
Hundredth (2 decimal places)374,518.27
Thousandth (3 decimal places)374,518.267

Significant figures

Significant figures count from the first non-zero digit. 0.004567 to 2 significant figures is 0.0046, and 52,861 to 3 significant figures is 52,900. Leading zeros are never significant; trailing zeros after the decimal point are. In UK schools this is written “2 s.f.” and decimal places “2 d.p.”.

Excel’s ROUND function rounds halves away from zero. Python’s round() uses half to even, which avoids a small upward bias when many values are added, which is why it is also called banker’s rounding.

When to round

Round only at the end of a calculation. Rounding in the middle adds small errors that can grow: work with full values and round the final answer. Money is usually rounded to the nearest cent (2 decimal places), and a measurement should not be given with more digits than the instrument can actually measure.

Exact decimals

Many apps store numbers in binary, so 1.005 is really 1.00499999… and rounds to 1.00. This calculator works on the exact decimal digits you type, so 1.005 to two decimal places gives 1.01 and 2.675 gives 2.68, as you would get on paper.

Frequently asked questions

How do you round to the nearest tenth?

Keep one digit after the decimal point and look at the second: 5 or more rounds up. 7.36 → 7.4 and 7.34 → 7.3.

What is 374,518 rounded to the nearest hundred?

374,500, because the tens digit is 1, which is less than 5.

Does 5 round up or down?

In the standard school method, 5 always rounds up: 2.5 → 3. Banker’s rounding sends an exact 5 to the nearest even digit instead: 2.5 → 2, 3.5 → 4.

What does 3 decimal places mean?

Three digits after the decimal point. 2.71828 to 3 decimal places is 2.718.

How do you round negative numbers?

Usually by size, ignoring the sign: −2.6 → −3 and −2.4 → −2. For an exact half, methods differ; see the table above.
